Flintshire

Background

Flintshire is bounded by the counties of Wrexham, Denbighshire and Cheshire . Wirral Metropolitan Borough also shares a boundary along the tidal estuary of the River Dee. The extreme north-west of the county is bounded by the Irish Sea , while the built-up area of the City of Chester straddles the English/Welsh border at Saltney. The south-west of the county is bounded by the Clwydian Hills which forms a distinct boundary with Denbighshire.

Flintshire covers an area of 49,891 hectares including the Dee Estuary and 43,464 hectares excluding the estuary. Census 2001 statistics show that the area supports 148,594 people, making the county the sixth largest in Wales in terms of population .

The population of Flintshire has grown markedly over the last 10 years, along with that of Denbighshire and Wrexham. This growth is higher than elsewhere in the region, across England and Wales and the UK as a whole. Apart from the urban strip along the Dee estuary, much of the county is rural and contains a number of small towns and villages. The south and west of the county is quite sparsely populated.

The population of Flintshire were largely born in the UK , with only 2.5% being born outside of Britain . The number of immigrants from outside the EU exceeds the number of persons belonging to ethnic minorities by over 50%.

In the 1991 Census, most of Flintshire's workforce was engaged in either managerial and technical occupations (29%) or skilled occupations (43%). In the short term (1998-2007), agriculture and mining are projected to continue to decline, while the major local growth areas are expected to be in engineering, manufacturing, services and communications. Flintshire has a significant manufacturing sector compared to both North Wales and Wales . 96% of employers in Flintshire employ less than 50 people.
