Background

Conwy County Borough covers an area of 1,130 sq. km. with an estimated resident population in 2002 of 110,500 people. The narrow costal belt contains over 4/5 th of the population. Approximatly 5% of the population live in the Snowdonia National Park .

Conwy has a low wage economy - wage levels in Conwy are also the lowest in Great Britain . (New earning Survey). Employment generally is within the service industry and tourism. The manufacturing base has declined considerably over the past fifteen years to employ less than 10% of employees by 2002. Though employment in agriculture accounted for only 3% of jobs at the 2001 Census, this sector is still at great significance within the area.

46% of the population of Conwy were born outside Wales . 29% of the population are Welsh speakers.
