Anglesey /Ynys Mon

Background

The Isle of Anglesey is unique in the fact that it is the largest island off the coast of Wales and England. Ynys Môn has less than half the average population of the unitary authorities in Wales, and is the second smallest after Merthyr Tydfil. The island’s population is estimated to have fallen by 4,000 between 1991 and 1999, which is numerically and proportionally the largest decline amongst the Welsh authorities. Population density is below the Welsh average, but not as low as the large rural counties of Powys and Gwynedd. Anglesey currently has a wide range of economic activities in the Primary (agriculture, mineral working), Secondary (manufacturing), Tertiary and Quaternary (services and office etc.) industries, but due to its peripheral location has long suffered from high levels of unemployment.
